As part of the technical program, Gayle Towell of AIM Solder will present “Rethinking Area Ratio: A Physics-Based Model for Predicting Solder Paste Transfer Efficiency for Thin Stencils” on Wednesday, October 7 at 12:30 p.m. Area ratio (AR) is widely used to predict solder paste transfer efficiency (TE), but it can become less reliable with ultrafine pitches and thinner stencils. This study proposes a stencil-thickness-dependent AR model based on the balance between gravitational forces, which scale with paste volume, and adhesive forces, which scale with surface area. Applied to previously published print-test data, the model more accurately predicts TE across varying stencil designs and may help inform future ultrafine printing standards.
